Coffee: The Lifeblood of America

Like most of you, I am a coffee drinker. It comes in many forms, but provides more than just a quick pick me up. Coffee, when used in moderation, provides high levels of antioxidants. It has other health benefits including; protection against Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes, and liver cancer.
Coffee also has potential to act as a more natural laxative when dealing with constipation. However, there are some not so beneficial side effects for us coffee drinkers. Caffeine is NOT recommended during a flare up or in recovery. But during the usual day to day, moderate portions can be useful as well as a delicious eye opener.
I only have 1-2 cups a day in excess. But lately I have cut back to about 3-4 cups per week. Everyone is different and you know your limitations.
If you are looking for a way to add cream or milk that is pretty gentle on the stomach, try the non dairy powdered creamers. CoffeeMate makes fabulous flavors. But if you want something more simplistic try the Natural Bliss line of refrigerated creamers. I have been using this one (pictured) and it is not upsetting my stomach like some heavy cream will. As always almond or coconut milk make great substitutions as well. Try it out and use the benefits of coffee in your fights against diverticulitis!
